I know there are lots of fancy programs for working with digital images, but I don’t own any and tell you the truth I don’t need them. I don’t do anything super complicated and for the things I do with my photos and digital images I use Paint.net. It’s a free program (something like the big brother to your ordinary Paint every computer has) and you can download it here. After some exploring and trying I found out that layering simple digital images in this program is pretty easy. I explained it to my online friend Maryvel last week and it was her idea to make a tutorial. So here it is - with lot of pictures so it’s easy to understand. As an example I used 2 digital images from Elizabeth O Dulemba. First I open the image I want to be in the background (File–Open–pick the image).
I make sure I have enough space around it - where I want the other image to be (Image–Canvas size–then add pixels to width/lenght. With this image I wanted to add some space on the left side - where I want to place the other image.

Look also at the anchor at the bottom of that window - it shows where the first image will be anchored - so you can add more space to one side only).
Then go to Layers–Import from file and pick the image you want to be in the front.
The program will put it to the front. If it’s too big it may cover the original image - just resize it by pulling the dot in the
corner.
Now you have 2 images on one page, but the second one still has white borders around it. Now look at the screen and find the Layers window (mine is always on the bottom right) - it should have 2 things in it - “background” and then “the image you added later:background” - they both have little green checkmarks on the right - uncheck the background one and now you should see only the second one on.
This is what you’ll see when you uncheck the background
Get the Magic Wand tool from the Tools window and click on the image (on the white part you want to get rid of) - then click Ctrl+X and the background should dissapear (turn to checkered one) - only the image stays white.
Now just check back on the other layer in the Layers window and you have both images together. You can still move the front image around, just don’t forget to change the magic wand tool for the one with the arrow (I often do
) When you are happy with the result - click on the Merge layer down button (Layers window - bottom middle) and save
Easy, isn’t it? If something is not clear or you have more questions leave me a message in Comments and I will try to answer it. ![]()
